Navel Orange Pest
updated: Sep 19, 2011, 8:04 PM

I'm wondering if some of the more horticulturally talented edhatters out there can help me out.

We have a navel orange tree in our backyard that is coming whose fruit is reaching ripeness. Some of the fruit has a cottony, white build up at the navel. There is definitely a pest associated with this, but I don't know what it is or how to treat it. You can see what I'm talking about in the photo, but there is also some sort of nymph or cocoon at about he one o'clock position in the navel. Other oranges have multiple "nymphs," but always and only at the navel. Any information or direction would be greatly appreciated.

Definitely mealybugs. They can damage a lot of plants. If you have houseplants, be careful bringing those oranges indoors. They can decimate your houseplants. If you see them on indoor plants and it's just a few, a spritz of rubbing alcohol or a Q-tip with rubbing alcohol can take care of them. Just dab it on the bug. I've found them on pomegranates also.

Mealy bugs. Here's link to how to deal with them. Synposis: hose them off, consider using insecticidal soap or make your own from dishwashing detergent. Google "mealy bugs" and go to the link at: houseplants.about dot com

Thanks for the identification and help. And the humor too! 670 should get a prize. Want an orange?

If you save enough of that navel lint, you might be able to make a pillow.
