Down River
updated: Sep 14, 2011, 2:00 PM

By John Wiley

Flying down the river (Skykomish?) along Stevens Pass from Wenatchee to Seattle I pondered a fire lookout that seemed to be open. In my youth it had seemed a romantic notion to live in a fire lookout for a summer, and I heard one story of lightning moving the hut off its foundation.

There was an active fire not far away making the air hazy, so snaps of some craggy distant peaks are less crisp than I'd like. Have to go back!

Where the valley opens up to metro Seattle area we detoured through this striking alpine valley far above the highway.

After we passed through, this view of the peak looked like something from another continent.

Down in the valley, rapids mingled with sand bars and bridges among the trees next to the road.

As the mountains gave way to rolling hills we passed a small lake with the sort of boats that say Seattle for us.

Years ago we were paddling on a similar lake there, when a boat with an umbrella (I won't name the brand on it) cruised up asking if we'd like to buy a cappucino.

310 It's not Ross Lake which is way larger and goes up in to southern B.C. Canada.

On John's photo page the picture is larger (more clear), and there is an identifying write-up about it. Here is the link to it: http://www.flickr.com/photos/jw4pix/6146591628/in/photostream
