30th Rincon Classic
updated: Jan 12, 2013, 1:00 PM

By David Powdrell

Nobody sent me the memo. Without first checking www.rinconclassic.com, I went racing out of bed crack o' dawn this morning thinking I was missing the 30th Annual Rincon Classic.

My first sign that things were amiss, however, was when I drove into the Rincon Beach parking lot with empty spaces galore and no Quicksilver bus ominously parked on Bates Road. Oh well, it's always good to get down to Rincon.

If you get a chance, support the Rincon Classic. It's a bunch of good folks doing good things for the ocean and the environment, there are always some amazing surfers in the water pushing the limits of the sport, there are a ton of raffle items, they have a photo contest and a video contest, demo surfboards available and lots more.

Each Wednesday at 5:00 p.m. they'll announce on their website whether the week-end event is on or postponed, pending surf conditions. Again: www.rinconclassic.com What the heck, I've got a few hours to burn before the wife has me take down the Christmas lights. Maybe there's some fun surf worth photographing. Check it out.

How do the surfers stand the freezing water? You couldn't pay me to stick my toe in.

Thick 4-3 wet suit keeps me plenty warm for hours out there in the cold water. That and good waves will keep me in the water.

Chris should have had the contest that weekend. He passed on a great opportunity for good waves and weather. I guess he has to bow to the sponsors nowadays since this "local" event has gotten so big.

you'd be amazed how much work surfing is 976, with a good 4/3 suit and maybe some booties you can stay in the water for hours because you're paddling all the time.

That's me in the second picture down. Did you get any others wound love to see more pics. Great morning, a lot of people didn't come surfing because they thought it was the contest too.

Earlier in the week they were calling for rain and windy on Sunday , that could be why they didn't have the contest.
Hard to plan perfect weather and waves on the weekend.

298...touch base with Edhat staff and I'll shoot you copies of you surfing that wave. Best part of shooting surf photos is giving the images to the surfers.

Dude in the 2nd pic down doesn't have a head. He's like a chicken surfing with his head cut off.
