He owned a vacation home in the Santa Cruz Mountains and entertained a lot of his Hollywood actor friends there in the 30's and 40's. He was was quite interested in gardening, had beautiful ornamentals and fruits and veggies. Of course SC is much like SB--you can grow just about anything there (but tropicals).
