DOG OF THE WEEK

Rosie
updated: Nov 03, 2012, 9:00 AM

Rosie, a 17-month German Shepherd/Lab/Great Dane/Pit Bull mix, lives at the Vedanta Temple. She came as a rescue from DAWG and despite serious setbacks on the way, has been living life joyfully and to the fullest. After she moved to the Temple we discovered that she was born without a left hip socket. Then, a few months later, the right leg came out of its socket . She also had severe elbow dysplasia.

Rosie never got grumpy, never complained, she just played as hard and as best she could. CARE repaired her elbows and, after a few more months, performed a double femoral/hip ostectomy on her femurs/hips that is allowing her to live a normal life. The funds for her surgeries came mainly from members of the Santa Barbara Choral Society (in which Rosie's mother sings) as well as DAWG volunteers who had fallen in love with Rosie when she lived at DAWG. Between the Choral Society, DAWG volunteers and Rosie's own joyful exuberance, she's now leading a happy life in which she chases deer, coyotes, cats (if her mother isn't watching) and, when she's desperate, birds.

Oh Rosie, what a wonderful girl you must be - to endure all you have and still have such a joyous attitude. Maybe we should all take a lesson from you.

Another GREAT animal story. In these hard times it's always a treat to read about people's generous and loving natures. Rosie sure seems worth it all.
