CAT OF THE WEEK

Oscar

He was a "wee kit" (small kitten) when we got him. A co-worker of my daughter's in Goleta was taking the Express bus from Santa Maria to and from work every day, and there was a dumpster behind the bus stop where she sat each morning. She became aware of a pregnant cat, which she and her husband tried to catch to no avail. After awhile they realized that the momma had had her litter in the dumpster, so they brought her food and kept an eye on her, planning to catch her and her kittens as time and circumstance allowed.

In due course they did manage to rescue and provide good homes for all the cats - we ended up with Oscar, who was the last kitten captured, and was and is the shyest and most skittish of the lot. He received a lot of intense socialization at our house as a kitten, but even so will absolutely not appear if anyone outside of the family is in the house. In the beginning he had a number of hiding places, all of which we discovered and sealed off over time, but his last and best escape we left for him. It is a small closet off of what was once the shared bedroom of our two youngest boys, but is now my husband's office. We leave the closet door open, and there is an old bunk bed ladder that the boys used to use to access the attic for use as a fort. Oscar is adept at climbing the ladder, and now the fort is his fortress. Oscar comes in and sleeps on our bed at night, and he comes downstairs in the morning (the office is upstairs, off our bedroom) and sits with us as we have our coffee. If it is a nice morning, we all sit outside.
