Ah, Michigan, land of my youth. I visited Mackinac Island several times. I love "Mackinac Island Fudge" ice cream. Vanilla ice cream with swirls of chocolate and little squares of chewy fudge. Mmm, memories...

I too would like some more pictures. And of the island. I believe that is the place that Christopher Reeves' "Somewhere in Time" was filmed. Very quaint.

142: What part of MI are you from? It's the land of my youth, too. Heading back there next week, in fact, for the first time in a couple of decades.

I am a Michigander too. I spent my summers in St. Ignace and remember when the bridge was built. Before that waiting for the ferry in lines of cars for hours was the only way to the UP. Your travelogue has brought back sweet memories, and reminds me of a beautiful and unique spot to visit in future travels.

Thanks for posting! I grew up in Michigan, went to school in the UP (yahubetcha'), and vacationed on Macinac Island a number of times. If you have more pictures please consider posting! oxxo

Gosh, there's quite a few EdHat readers from MI...I am originally from Lansing, and sure remember waiting in line for the ferry before the bridge was built. It was such an exciting occasion when the bridge did open up for traffic, and I enjoyed that ride across many times...and 2 trips to Mackinac Island. Did a lot of camping in the UP...swimming in Lake Michigan and freezing in Lake Superior even in the summer. Love the photograph which brought back memories. Sault Ste. Marie had about 2 weeks of summer, it seemed. Most of our weekends were spent at Grand Haven (great beach on Lake MI in the lower peninsula).

Y'all: thanks for the kind words! It's encouraging and I'll keep typing. But I don't have many photos of Michigan sights. For various reasons, it just wasn't much of a photog trip. Ditto for Wisconsin. Both states are lovely, but . . . Next time!!!
