Retired Santa Barbara County Counsel Shane Stark participated in the (videotaped) League of Women Voters forum that has been airing on a local TV Channel regarding the State Propositions on the November ballot. Shane is a treasure -- with a wealth of impartial information. It was a pleasure to be able to view the forum on TV. Many thanks to the League and Shane's informative presentations ... and the local TV for airing the dialogues. (Sorry, I do not know which exact local channel: I was clicking through and caught the forum.)

Mr. Stark, how does one go about getting follow-up information from the Sheriff's Department? Can one ask for the Case Number, and then request the file of the Case Number?

Anyone from the LWV here or anyone else to say what Channel? Hunting, I find Ch 21 but haven't found when the Propositions are televised. http://www.sbchannels.tv/

I found it's on twice tomorrow, both times in Spanish, 10:30AM and 4 pm --- it's a bummer that they choose to do that and not in English.

(per videotape viewed on TV)
Some one asked where we can find out who or what organizations are supporting a Proposition (and opposition folks): the answer was a web site: [pretty cool]

ballotpedia

About the Channel: I "thought" it was 18 ... the one for the City Council / City Planning / Creeks / etc. But I am not 100% sure. My apologies (again).

The ballot measure forum is running on Channel 21. Several candidate forums are also being shown. The forums are shown in both English and Spanish. Not sure of the schedule. The SB Channels might have them posted.

620P:

You may call the sheriff office and request a copy of the information by giving them the case number. If there is any hesitancy in their giving that information, ask to speak with Lois Blake, head of the records department.

Consistent with the first tip by Shane Stark, the schedule for replays by Santa Barbara Channels is here for cable TV channel 21:

Look up the election fora or related content by searching on the word FORUM or PROPOSITIONS to find the title and schedule. New content is added every week or so for the dates beyond the current schedule.

As is Shane's custom, well written and informative about something useful.

Good and timely subject Shane. Of course you know as a long term public servant (and I mean that flatteringly as you were a true public servant), that some agencies interpret their duties under the FOI laws in the most restrictive manner possible and make no effort to obtain all of the correspondence in their possession on a sensitive matter. So how about a discussion on remedies and alternatives? Thanks.

Excellent, lucid primer Shane, as always.

This is one of the most useful articles Edhat has ever published. Thank you Edhat and thank you Shane!

If the Board of Trustees at SBCC had just had this primer six months ago, they might have spared themselves a messy election. Instead, they flat out refused to supply public information, and even hired an LA attorney to the tune of $20K to thwart public access to Board meeting tapes.

People who want to do the public's work privately should be replaced!

And so Edhat is going to link to this somewhere beside the News links, right? Oherwise in about 3 days it will be lost forever off the site. This is good info and bears a left nav link. Please Ed hear me on this.

Ditto on Z28racergirl's comment, Ed.

Shane's comments are well worth an easy-to-find archive.

Thanks
