101 North has a lot of excellent dining options. Do try the Madonna Inn Copper Cafe for their BLT and rich blue cheese salad combo and their homemade pies are legendary. Pismo Beach is home to the fabulous Mo's BBQ. Salinas Bahama Grill has fresh and flavorful key lime pie and a very intriguing eclectic casual menu. The dining choices now in Paso Robles compete with most larger cities as they are now a culinary wine and dine destination. The steak pieces and potato skillet appetizer at the bar at McLintoks in Pismo is worth taking that exit off 101 too. And Chef Rick's in Orcutt is worth a day trip in its own right. Jocko's in Nipomo is where you can't leave without a doggie bag for for their almost two for one prices for the steak crowd.

We always drove past Pinnacles National Monument when going up the 101 until a recent trip when we left earlier in the day. It's a great place for a hike and photographs. There are even a couple caves you can hike through if you have a flashlight and don't mind a few uneven rock stairs. We'd highly recommend it as a 2-3 hour side trip if you have time.

Too many good dining-out places in CA to mention. Besides, destination travel writing is a bit like work. Stopped by the Pinnacles a few years ago. Must not have been impressed, since I forgot 'em... You need to be a good photographer to make use of them. mcsea

King City, half-way between SB and the Monterey Peninsula, used to seem a good break-point but a wasteland for food, on our many 101-runs; glad to hear of the pizza tip; and as a fair trade, we suggest that everyone should try Tacos La Potranca at 201 Broadway; exit at First Street and drive a short distance east to Broadway, make a left, and stop at this great stand one block further on. Two fine tortas and Mexican colas for $11, a steal.

In King City--try El Lugarcito at the north end of Broadway (take the first northbound exit, turn left on B'way. at first corner, on the right. Specializing in Mariscos, seafood, their shrimp tostadas, dressed simply in a cilantro-lime vinegrette, are wonderful. Great house-made roasted green chile and tomatillo salsa. Kitty corner, there is a great little taco stand serving wonderful lengua tacos. Very good and inexpensive. There are several Farmer's Markets in the Salinas Valley. Soledad's is on Thurs afternoon. I always try to stop when getting a tres leches parfait cup at the bakery on Main St. Salinas native and Bay Area chowhound Melanie Wong has done heroic research on the thriving Salinas taco Truck scene. Her results are listed here: link

Oakland is a fantastic place to spend a weekend. I like it better than San Francisco.

Emeryville Ikea's a treat. The day it opened they let so many people in that the whole building began to shake and had to be closed until some shoppers had been put back into the waiting line.

Seedlady, you can talk food. Hope Ed gives you a dining column slot here too for some regular reports and insights on the culinary arts and not just menu recitations.

We like to stop at Paula's Pancake House in Solvang for breakfast on the way north. Great big thin Danish pancakes, similar to crepes, with an egg and a lovely Danish sausage if desired. Enough to keep us going all the way to the Bay area, with a stop at that Paso Robles Starbucks for some caffeine. Thanks for the Mexican tips in King City, will keep those in mind. Ikea! Oh god. You have captured it well.
