Bathing Question |

This thread reminded me of a famous quote in our house. When our son was about 3 or 4 years old, the babysitter would try and get him to wear his undies, or something, while in the hot tub....he refused. She always wore a bathing suit. One day, frustrated, she asked him, "well, what do you wear in the hot tub?" ....and his reply, "just the wiener".

I think if you feel uncomfortable you should stop because you pass that on to the child. If you don't feel uncomfortable then don't stop and don't make it a big deal ~ it doesn't have to be a big taboo sinful thing for a child to see their parents naked. If the child starts to act inappropriately then stop too of course or use it a teaching opportunity of what is and isn't appropriate to say and do with anyone in their lives when they see them naked.....you surely won't' be the only person they see naked. Americans are so provincial when it comes to nudity. Why are we so ashamed of our bodies?

I think this is an excellent forum for such a question. I think when the parent starts wondering about the appropriateness, maybe then it's time to stick with same sex bathing. My father helped us in the shower until I was 6 or so, though it was we who were bathing; he was not.

There are places in the world, where the whole family bathes and lives together. For example, in Scandinavia and Finland it is not unknown for grand dad, granny, uncle Sven, the toddlers the teens and the neighbours to cram into the sauna. Warning for blue noses, beer and schnaps are often served as well. Somehow these countries score highly on the happiness scale. Is there a lesson here?

No bathing with children - either with parents or offspring. Not even on the radar.

Nice to finally get a couple serious answers. Do the feelings change when it is a step parent bathing with the child?

I don't recall ever bathing with my mom (or dad for that matter) except for once when I had a very high fever and she got into an ice bath with me cause I was NOT going to get in alone!

Wow, nobody has given you a half serious answer, which is shows the lack of maturity that is prevailent here! I remember taking baths with my mom until I was about 6 or so but, being female, my father had nothing to do with my bathing for a while before that, maybe since I was 4 or so and only if mom wasn't available but she mostly was. As a single mother I supervised my son in the bath until he was 5 or 6, but didn't wash his body after he was 3 or so, I taught him to wash himself up and he did not bathe with me after he was 2 or so. Kids just get too curious, especially with the opposite sex.

You should stop bathing with your children at about the same time you stop breast feeding them. At about 7 or 8 years old.

For me, I love them all, but the little girl pushing the kitty in the stroller, the cat with his/her ears turned backward, and that last bird just crack me up!

Yet creepy, this is a serious issue. It is not about perversion. It is simply a question about the mental health of a child. When the child becomes aware of their own body it seems unhealthy for the child to be bathing with adults - even their parents.
